Energy Does Not Lie, But It Can Be Misinterpreted

We hear a lot these days about "Don't be a people pleaser."

Don't let anyone cross your boundaries.

And there is truth in all of that.

But sometimes I think we're forgetting another side.

Being real isn't only about standing your ground. It's also about being honest with your friends, communicating with grace, and being willing to look within yourself when something triggers you.

Complaining doesn't mean we're standing in our truth.

Sometimes it means we found something inside ourselves that still needs to be understood.

The same thing can happen when we judge someone as a people pleaser.

There certainly are people who do things because they desperately want acceptance. Sometimes they say yes when they really mean no. They may give out of obligation and then become resentful later.

That energy can feel uncomfortable because what they're doing and what they're actually feeling don't match.

But I think there's another type of person that sometimes gets misunderstood.

There are people who give simply because they want to give.

They may allow someone else to have the moment because they don't need to prove they're the smartest or strongest person in the room.

They may bend a boundary a little—not because they don't have boundaries, but because they're curious about what they might learn from the experience.

They might help someone without expecting anything back because, to them, they are getting something back.

They're learning.

They're experiencing.

They're growing.

They understand that sometimes allowing yourself to enter an uncomfortable situation can teach you something about people—and about yourself—that you could never learn from a book.

That doesn't mean allowing someone to abuse you or repeatedly disrespect your boundaries.

There's a difference between consciously stepping outside of your comfort zone and abandoning yourself.

But some people are willing to take that risk.

They flow with people. They listen. They allow other people to share, shine and feel important.

Not because they're weak.

Not because they're looking for acceptance.

And not because they're being fake.

Sometimes they're simply coming from their heart.

And I think it's sad when that is automatically interpreted as weakness or manipulation.

Because sometimes our interpretation says more about what we've experienced than it does about the person standing in front of us.

If someone has experienced manipulation over and over again, genuine kindness may feel suspicious.

If someone has been taken advantage of, generosity may come with a question:

What does this person really want from me?

If someone has learned that vulnerability is dangerous, a person who openly gives from the heart may look naive or weak.

The energy they're sensing may be real.

But their interpretation of that energy may be coming through the filter of their own experiences.

And this is where intuition gets complicated.

Energy does not lie, but we can misinterpret it.

We don't experience another person's energy in an empty space. We experience it through ourselves—through our memories, our fears, our beliefs, our past relationships and the things we've survived.

This is why knowing yourself is such an important part of developing intuition.

Before deciding what someone's energy means, sometimes we have to ask:

Am I seeing this person clearly, or am I seeing them through something that happened to me?

Is this way of looking at life working for me? Or is it making me deal with things negatively?

You can accurately sense that something is there and still misunderstand what it means.

And sometimes the deeper spiritual lesson isn't learning how to read everybody else's energy.

It's learning what inside of you is doing the interpreting.

If you're lucky enough to experience someone who truly gives from the heart, you may discover a different way of looking at people.

And once you experience that world, you may never want to go back.
