You Can Open Your Heart Without Carrying Everyone

For a long time, I think many of us were taught that being spiritual meant being available.

If someone is hurting, help them.

If someone needs to talk, listen.

If you have a gift that can help someone, use it.

There is something beautiful about that.

But I've also learned there is a difference between opening your heart to someone and allowing yourself to become responsible for their entire journey.

That line can become very blurry.

Especially if you're naturally empathetic.

Sometimes a person doesn't just need support. They begin pulling you into their world.

Their problems become the center of every conversation.

You spend hours thinking about how to help them.

You give advice.

You encourage them.

You try another approach.

And eventually you realize that you're putting more energy into changing their life than they are.

That's when helping can quietly turn into carrying.

I've had to learn this in my own work.

When you work closely with people, you naturally want good things for them. You want them to heal. You want them to recognize opportunities. You want them to move beyond whatever keeps hurting them.

But there is something we have to remember:

We can guide people, but we cannot do their inner work for them.

And sometimes that is a difficult lesson for a caring person to accept.

You may see someone's potential very clearly.

You may even see the door they could walk through.

But they still have to decide to walk through it.

This doesn't mean we become cold.

It doesn't mean we stop caring.

And it certainly doesn't mean we stop helping people.

It means learning the difference between compassion and consumption.

Compassion says, I'm here with you.

Consumption happens when someone else's situation begins taking over your thoughts, your time, your peace, and eventually your own energy.

There should still be a "you" left after you help someone.

I think this is especially important for anyone who does readings, healing work, caregiving, teaching, or simply happens to be the person everyone calls when something goes wrong.

Your heart can be open without becoming a revolving door.

You can listen without absorbing.

You can guide without controlling the outcome.

You can care deeply and still have boundaries.

Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is give someone light while allowing them to decide what they're going to do with it.

Open your heart.
Offer your light.
Guide when you're able.
But don't lose yourself trying to become someone else's sun.
